Mangalakara Children’s Home & Education Centre is situated on a beautifully maintained 13 acre site with flowering shrubs and trees planted for shade; temperatures can reach 48/50 C. The rocky terrain in the area, with low fertility, poor agricultural yields and the prolonged drought conditions in recent years have contributed to the extreme poverty in the area. As a result, approximately 30% of the children are orphaned. Others are from unsafe home environments, destitute or abandoned by desperately poor or sick parents.
Within the 4 acre Children’s Home Compound there are excellent educational facilities including science and computer labs, large library and 3 playgrounds, which can accommodate up to 300 children from 1st to 10th Standard which is equivalent to GCSE level.
Accommodation at Mangalakara consists of separate residential dormitories for boys and girls plus separate accommodation for domestic workers. In an adjoining compound there is family accommodation for residential teachers and the faculty of the Multi-Skills School.
The Mangalakara Children’s Home & Education Centre cannot be bought into; it exists to help only those who cannot help themselves: orphans or children from desperately poor or tragic families.
